This is a time of reflection on the past year; on things we enjoyed or regret, on friends we made or lost, and on other changes in our lives, for the better or worse. As we try to recall all of the highs and lows of the great expanse of time that has been 2011, it is also a time to consider goals for 2012.

2011 was an extraordinary year for QuellyRue Designs. We had the opportunity to work some fabulous people, vend at a number of events, and we were featured in countless blogs/websites including Essence Magazine, Huffington Post, Audacity of Color, Natural Hair Beauty, Ghana Rising, Fly Girl Blog, and OmoYankee!

I'd like to give thanks to our loyal customers, bloggers, friends, and family for helping propel QuellyRue Designs to where we are today. We’re looking forward to a great 2012, rolling out a few new fashion accessories in the new year and something special that I hope to be able to share with you next week.

Bullying Prevention Awareness Giveaway

Hi Everyone, it's time for another giveaway!

This week at QuellyRue Designs, we're promoting Bullying Prevention Awareness! Bullying affects so many people in so many ways. Bullying can be verbal, physical, or via the Internet. It can severely affect the victim's self-image, social interactions, and school performance―often leading to insecurity, lack of self-esteem, and depression in adulthood.

My first experience of bullying was in 3rd grade. There was a girl in my class who didn't like me for some reason, I don't know. We never spoke and to my knowledge I kept my distance from her. Besides, I was very quiet in school. I mainly only hung out with my brother, sisters and a small group of friends I pretty much considered family. One afternoon during recess, I was standing in front of my classroom and holding on to the doorway when she slammed the door shut on my hand. OUCH, I know! It happened so fast but I remember the look of anger on her face as the teacher reprimanded her. I wont share the graphic details of my injuries, only that I broke my pinky finger and I had a high fever for several days. My parents, who very upset over the situation, played an active role in making sure this never happened again in my school.

It saddens me to my core when I hear these cases of school/workplace shootings and children being driven to suicide or died because of bullying. It's time for bullying to end in society. Everyone has the right to be respected and the responsibility to respect others. Cancer Awareness Giveaway

This week at QuellyRue Designs, we're promoting awareness for Cancer! There are so many different types of cancers, I had such a hard time narrowing it down to one. Especially since they are all equally important and several of my loved ones have been affected by difference forms of this deadly disease.

This giveaway is dedicated to my great-uncle, Fred, who passed away a few years ago from cancer. He had been fighting what believed was a common cold for several weeks. When he finally decided to see a doctor, he was diagnosed with throat cancer in stage 4 which had also spread to his nasal cavity. Two weeks later he passed away.

You can learn more about the different types cancers, find support and treatment, explore research, or get involved in the fight against cancer by visiting the website of the American Cancer Society.

Happy November, everyone! What better way to start this month than to have a giveaway!

I will be doing giveaways each week, but I want them to have more meaning than just giving stuff away, so I've decided to tie each giveaway with charitable causes I support. Each post will contain a blog button for the charitable cause of that week. When you click on this button you will be able to donate to these wonderful causes. You don't have to donate to be entered to win the giveaways, but each donation (large or small) will go a long way to helping these causes.

So now for this week's giveaway...Let's talk diabetes for a minute.

Diabetes is a disease in which the body is unable to produce or unable to properly use and store glucose (a form of sugar). Glucose backs up in the bloodstream — causing one’s blood glucose or "sugar" to rise too high.

Several of my loved ones are living with diabetes, and I had my own scare early this year at a routine checkup. There are different types of diabetes with different challenges, but the bottom line is, we need a cure.

I'm doing my part by offering a portion of proceeds from the sale of items from my shop to the American Diabetes Association, and I hope that you will also join me in supporting this cause.

Have a looksee at my latest creation, Women of Africa Tote bag. I made this bag over the weekend and I had so much fun painting and sewing away.

This tote bag reminds me of the funtimes I had growing up in Ghana, West Africa. Playing soccer with the boys, pounding fufu for dinner, climbing the mango and orange trees for sweet healthy treats...ahhh those were the days! The memories of my late grandmother, Nana Serwaa Bonsu, and all the children in the village she cared for. Even when they had so little, they had so much more - Life, Love, Happiness.

Recap: Shecky’s “Girls Night Out” Returns to the Big Apple!

So last Wednesday I attended Shecky’s Girls Night Out with my girlfriends, and we had a fabulous time! If you don’t know what Shecky’s is, you are MISSING OUT. It’s a fun biannual shopping event that occurs in many cities across the US and offers clothing, jewelry, accessories, and services from hundreds of vendors — plus free cocktails and amazing treat-filled goodie bags too. The best part is that this year, admission + a goodie bag was $15 advance!

We wandered around for a bit, checking out the different vendors. There were definitely lots of cute options in many different price points and everything with a special Shecky's discount! The selection of clothing was nice, but most of it felt like something you could pick up at your local H&M, Forver21, etc. The perfect nightcap to the evening was getting the famous Shecky’s goodie bag!

Yes, all this for $15!!!

Overall, Shecky's continues to be a super fun night out, a perfect way to indulge a few hours, and amazing vendors. I definitely recommend checking out the next one in your area!

....and haven't been blogging as much as I should. Life has been full of alot of busy busy things and I am barely finding time to sleep much less blog (why oh why do we have to sleep, just think of how much more we could get done in a day if sleep wasn't a necessity!)

I have decided I am making it my goal to post a new blog at LEAST every other day but will try to post daily....the hard part for me is finding something fresh and new to blog about that is both interesting AND fun for those who read my blog and hasn't been done before. I want to try to set it apart a little from what alot of other blogs blog about...not because I think there is anything wrong with that (I enjoy reading so many blogs!) but because I hope to be a little different somewhere along the way...

Say it's MY BIRTHDAY!!!

It's my birthday too yeah! :)

There are two things I look forward to every year on my birthday:
1. My mom baking me a birthday cake. (I don't fancy who needs store bought!)
2. Hanging out with friends eating good food and getting a little tipsy all on the account of that hot summer day in July 21 years ago. Sike, I'm really 25 :). OMG, my I am a quarter of a century!

Time really does fly, and it's amazing how things change so quickly. It always baffles me how in a year's time I'm in a complete different stage of my life. I think it's fantastic and I must say I feel truly blessed to see another year that will bring many more wonderful changes and surprises.

Today I plan on staying in my PJ's all day relaxing, crafting as usual, catch some flicks and then a nice dinner with my family. I'm not sure what else they have planned for me but honestly, just being home with the family is enough for me :)

Craft For A Cause: Baobab Tree Necklace for Senegal

It is always a beautiful thing when people use their talents to help others.

This lovely necklace was made by jewelry designer Meiko Takahashi of Shizendesigns. It is inspired by the Baobab tree in Senegal, a small country on the West Coast of Africa. In Senegal, the locals call the Baobab Tree "the upside down tree" because the tree branches look like roots, as though God had dropped them from the sky upside down.

The Baobab tree shape is cut within a 30-mm diameter fine silver medallion and hung on a 16-inch sterling silver Rollo chain with a 2-inch extension chain.

Meiko is donating 10% from the sale of this necklace to World Vision in honor of her sister Kari and the people of Senegal.

Happy Independence Day Ghana!

Hip hip hip horaay! Today my homeland Ghana celebrates her 53rd anniversary of independence!

On this day March 6, 1957, Ghana became the first nation in sub-Sahara Africa to gain independence, with the memorable words ushered by great Pan-Africanist and founder of Ghana Dr. Kwame Nkrumah:

"At long last, the battle has ended. Ghana--our beloved country--is free forever!
"

And yet again I want to take the opportunity to thank the chiefs and people of this country, the youth, the farmers, the women who have so nobly fought and won this battle. Also I want to thank the valiant ex-service men who have so co-operated with me in this mighty task of freeing our country from foreign rule and imperialism. And as I pointed out... I made it quite clear that from now on – today – we must change our attitudes, our minds, we must realise that from now on, we are no more a colonial but a free and independent people. But also, as I pointed out, that also entails hard work. That new African is ready to fight his own battles and show that after all, the black man is capable of managing his own affairs. We are going to demonstrate to the world, to the other nations, that we are prepared to lay our own foundation. Our own African identity As I said in the assembly just minutes ago, I made a point that we are going to create our own African personality and identity. It's the only way that we can show the world that we are ready for own own battles. But today, may I call upon you all - that on this great day, let us all remember that nothing in the world can be done unless it's had the purport and support of God. We have won the battle and we again re-dedicate ourselves ... Our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of Africa. Let us now fellow Ghanaians, let us now ask for God's blessing and for only two seconds in your thousands and millions, I want to ask you to pause only for one minute and give thanks to almighty God for having led us through our difficulties, imprisonments, hardships and suffering to have brought us to the end of our trouble today. One minute silence. Ghana is free forever and here I will ask the band to play the Ghana national anthem." Reshaping Ghana's destiny I am depending upon the millions of the country, and the chiefs and people, to help me to reshape the destiny of this country. We are prepared to pick it up and make it a nation that will be respected by every nation in the world. We know we are going to have difficult beginnings, but again, I'm relying upon your support, I'm relying upon your hard work. Seeing you in this… it doesn't matter how far my eye goes, I can see that you are here in your millions and my last warning to you is that you are to stand firm behind us so that we can prove to the world that when the African is given a chance he can show the world that he is somebody! Wooowzers, I cant believe its March already! Seem like it was just yesterday that I was ringing in bells for 2010 in Ghana. But in any case, I'm not complaining. I am ready to kick off my snow boots and run free in a field of new blooms. I know, I know, the weather forecasters are predicting more snow on Wednesday, but watevs!

I can already smell the scent of spring in the air. While I love the longer, warmer days, and the fragrance of fresh flowers spring brings, I love women's fashion in the spring even more. Spring is the time to indulge in your feminine side with beautiful flowing skirts, and stylish, flared gaucho pants. Blouses and shirts for spring are flowery and feminine and spring sandals are to-die-for.

Today was just ridiculously C.O.L.D. I'm talking the kind of cold that starts IN your bones and works it's way out. Luckily I had just completed a few of my newl large scarves and stayed toasty warm wrapped inside of one :) Now available in my shop.

Okay, so I admit I have gone a little cowl crazy but these babies are SO warm and toasty and easy to wear when you don't want to mess with having a scarf hanging in the way....AND you can even pull these up over your head and ears and wear them like a hat! I highly suggest these for those brisk winter evening walks or while you're out shopping...
